Tirana, Albania’s capital for 101 years

Tirana was declared the capital of Albania on February 11, 1920, following a vote made during the Lushnja Congress in January 1920. The government offices were in Durres at the time, and it was a difficult time. However, the Italians occupied Durres. Vlora was the first capital of Albania when the country gained independence from Ismail Qemali in 1912, and the Congress of Lushnja saw it as an opportunity. But Vlora was a little far from the north of the country. Then another opportunity was Shkodra, which at that time was the largest city in Albania. But Shkodra was near Montenegro, with which we also had problems, and was far from the rest of the country. Then it was decided that there was no better solution than Tirana, in terms of geographical position in the center of the country.
